What is protein powder useful for?

The short answer

Protein powder is a convenient way to add protein to a drink or meal. It isn’t a requirement for exercising. Food can supply enough protein, including for many athletes.

Look at the food you already eat

Eggs, dairy, fish, beans and soy all provide protein. A varied plant-based diet can supply it too. Look at what you eat across the day, rather than one meal alone.

A shake is another option. Think about where you would use it—at breakfast, in a smoothie or when you don’t have time to prepare food—before buying a tub.

What do the grams on the tub mean?

The scoop’s weight includes every ingredient in the powder. Look for the protein amount on the label; it can be less than the total scoop weight, as the example below shows.

  • Protein amount: compare grams of protein, not scoop size.
  • Recipe: choose unflavored to add your own flavor, or a flavored powder you can mix as it is.
  • Tub size: a large container is a bigger commitment before you know whether you like it.

30 g of powder → 25 g of protein
